Our well established Oil and Gas client is seeking a experienced Shift Production Coordinator at Kearl Oil Sands, AB.

Main Functions

The role primarily focuses on the coordination, optimization, and surveillance of production activities across all areas of the Kearl operation. 

Tasks and Responsibilities: 

Our client is seeking a Shift Production Coordinator to support the Kearl Asset as part of the Production Planning and Coordination Team. The position will be rotational based at the Kearl Oil  Sands Operation with fly-in/fly-out arrangements from Calgary. Shifts are 14 days on and 14 days off consisting of 12 hour workdays and a rotation between day and night shifts.

The Shift Production Coordinator is one of few roles in the central-to-operation Production Planning and Coordination team, a team that exists to understand, develop and leverage relationships across the full value chain to maximize cash flow for the operation. The role primarily focuses on the coordination, optimization, and surveillance of production activities across all areas of the Kearl operation.  Coordination spans both plant and mine areas of the operation, and is focused on short-range production plans (within the week). Short-range production plans developed by the Shift Production Coordinator provide a link to broader production and mine plan objectives, as well as manage compliance to more specific mine plans. 

The role is heavily involved in daily ore feed coordination within the mine, seeking to manage and optimize blend quality and recovery of product.

Additionally, the role serves as a key interface between various area-based and functional teams, ensuring that plans and events responses across all teams are aligned.  Daily the role will interface and coordinates across mine operations, plant operations, control room operators, and technical to identify problems and opportunities and provide direction on the path forward, including directly advising near term production decisions for the operation.  At times of competing priorities, the role will collaborate with the various teams and functions to ensure a best-for-operation approach is taken.  Candidates must be strong communicators and collaborators to achieve such objectives.  The nature of the work is dynamic and fast paced at times, and requires a balance of technical problem solving skills and operational knowledge. 

The Production Planning and Coordination team is constantly advancing how production plans and understanding of system constraints are developed and modeled; the ideal candidates are digitally fluent and are able to quickly learn new applications and systems.

Skills and Qualifications: 

Academic: A Bachelor Degree in Engineering is highly desirable but not a requirement


  • Minimum of 7-10 years surface mine or mine processing facilities experience is required Previous field experience in active mine operations or process facilities, including roles related to production coordination
  • Strong technical and operational knowledge of mining and processing facilities
  • Strong organizational skills, practical problem-solving skills and continuous improvement through critical thinking
  • Must be comfortable working in dynamic and high paced environments
  • Must demonstrate the ability work in multidiscipline teams crossing various functions
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, interact and influence without authority through all levels of an organization including technical functions and operational personnel
  • Self-motivated and able to function at a high performing level with minimal oversight in both office environment and active mining environments
  • Must demonstrate safety leadership
  • Must demonstrate a passion and the ability to lead, train and mentor others
  • Experience with production constraint modeling would be an asset Experience with visualization tools such as Power BI would be an asset Experience developing programs in Python would be an asset
  • Experience with mine planning and mine management systems applications would be an asset (Deswik, Minestar)
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications
