Our well established Oil and Gas client is seeking a experienced Mine Automation Application Engineer at Kearl Oil Sands, AB.

Main Functions

Working within the CAT Minestar Environment (Command, Fleet, Terrain) provide technical guidance, implement applications solutions, and best practices to sustain and enhance both the staffed and autonomous hauling mine operations. The candidate will be located in the Kearl Site Control Room, working in a cross functional team alongside Operations and other Technical functions with a tie to the field Maintenance staff as well.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate safety leadership through personal interactions with others, and expectation that it’s a core value engrained in any of the design/implementation work conducted through this role
  • Steward the configuration of the application – ensuring the background files and settings are properly configured in supervisor, fleet and terrain environments
  • Create and maintain model elements – way points, destinations, processors while ensuring naming conventions are correct and up to date
  • Ensure accuracy of the terrain block models and elevation designs by communicating with other Mine Planners
  • Tracking of issues and leading investigations for operations stoppages, and driving closure with implemented solutions or stewarding tickets with the vendor CAT
  • Optimizing the application and field operations with examination and tracking of speed zones and behavior regions and finding ways to improve truck productivities
  • Contributing to ongoing continuous improvement initiatives and future upgrade opportunities with the vendor for the application and on board truck systems
  • Contribute to ongoing development of standard procedures and best practices around the use of the application to improve mine performance
  • Provide coaching/mentorship/knowledge transfer to other junior engineers, Operations, and Maintenance to better understand how the technology may be leveraged
  • Support month end reconciliation of tonnage/grade with geologists and other mining engineers

Skills and Qualifications: Years of experience as well as any certifications/education/work experience that is required

Academic – Minimum BSc. Mining, Civil, Mechanical Engineering or related fields  


  • Targeting 5+ years of experience in mining (hard rock or oil sands)
  • Experience with a mine dispatch/control systems is considered an asset
  • Experience and competency in programming languages/logic, SQL/databases is an asset
  • Must be able to work within a multidisciplinary and cross functional setting
  • Previous field experience is an asset
  • Must be willing to work 14/14 rotation and every second rotation on night shift
